How Double Glazing Works
Double glazing limits the amount of heat energy that can be transferred from side to side, meaning that your home will stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
With double glazing, two separate panels of glass are in parallel with each other and leave an empty space between them. When one side of the panel heats up the energy is absorbed into this panel only. The heat energy cannot then be passed on to the other side of the window because the other glass panel is preventing it from doing so. The energy gets trapped between the panes and only few energy particles make it through to the other side.
In more modern instances of double glazing where the empty space is filled with a vacuum or an inert gas, the transfer of energy is reduces much more significantly.

Most double glazing windows come with an energy rating. The higher the energy rating the better the window, so picking one with a higher energy rating will improve the energy retention properties of the window.
Over time double glazing can be damaged if the sealant is damaged or with general wear and tear. If your double glazing window appears to have condensation or water droplets between the two panes of glass it means that the effectiveness of the glazing is significantly reduced.
