Fall brings about a change in temperatures, and there is plenty to do around the house to prepare for what comes after Fall.  Winter can be harsh on your home and your yard, making Fall the ideal time to start getting your proverbial ducks in a row.

If you’ve just recently become a homeowner, you may not have the right information to properly tend to your newly acquired home.  Take the time now to read through a brief look at some crucial home maintenance tips for Fall, and get to work preparing your property today.

Exterior home maintenance tips

The exterior of your home goes through a lot during the Fall and Winter seasons, and the weather is just perfect now for preparations.

  • Check and clean your gutters

Your home’s gutters drain rainwater away from the foundation of your home.  When they’re clogged, you put your home at risk of water damage.  The water will spill over and pool next to your home if you do not properly maintain your gutters and downspouts.

  • Clean the chimney to your fireplace

If your home has a fireplace, the chimney needs to be cleaned yearly to remove the built up soot and debris.  If you don’t clean your chimney, you place yourself and your family at risk of losing their home to a fire.

  • Drain your sprinkler systems

Drain your sprinklers, so the residual water inside the system doesn’t freeze during the winter months.  Freezing water can cause your system to break down much quicker than normal.

  • Manage your swimming pool

The warm temperatures of Summer are gone, and it’s time to winterize your pool.  You may choose to drain your pool, but it’s not always a necessary move.

Do a bit of research for your geological location, and make an educated decision on how you maintain your pool through the cooler seasons of the year.

  • Prep the plants for winter

If you enjoy boosting the curb appeal of your home, you’ll want to take steps to protect your foliage through the Winter months.  Start by adding a cozy layer of mulch around young trees and over flower beds.

Interior home maintenance tips

You want to make sure the inside of your home is good to go for the cooler temperatures.  Check these things off of your Fall maintenance checklist, and rest a little easier at night.

  • Inspect and service your HVAC system

You’ll need to have your heating and air systems cleaned and maintained about once per year to get the maximum lifespan out of your unit.

  • Reverse and clean your ceiling fans

Reversing your fan blades will help draw the warm air from your heater up from the floor.  Hot air does rise, but reversing your fan blades will help keep everything circulating in the right direction.

  • Flip or rotate your mattresses

Flipping your mattress every year is important for maintaining even wear.  You’ll get more comfortable years out of your mattress if you rotate or flip it ever six months to a year.
